Pet owners are being warned to protect their animals from the New World screwworm fly. This parasite has been confirmed in over 30 instances in Texas and New Mexico, including two cases in dogs.

The New World screwworm fly's larvae eat live flesh and fluids, posing a threat to mammals. After being largely eradicated from the US for over 50 years, the parasite reappeared in cattle in June.

Further information on the parasite and how to protect pets is available from veterinarians and humane societies, who are urging pet owners to remain vigilant. Details can be found through the Odessa American.
